In 2004, Ho’ala and I rented an RV and drove around the north island of New Zealand for two weeks. They drive on the other side of the road there and the RV we had was a stick shift, so driving was definitely an experience. NZ is so huge though, that imho, the RV is the only way to really experience as much as it has to offer.
We went through several different towns and had a lot of different experiences, but here are a couple of my faves. We jumped off the top of this building, the sky tower, in auckland. It’s a short freefall and then a controlled drop to the bottom (via that wire on the right hand side), but it still took a little nerve to push yourself off the edge.
One of the biggest selling points for Ho’ala was the surf.
We were into Lord of the Rings at the time, so it was really cool to see the countryside (or what we liked to call “the shire”), but the hot spring geysers and limestone caves were also really cool.
